CYA has four teams in one age group? I have never seen that before. That's crazy. The entire counties of Arlington and Prince William only get 3 each max.

I just check the CYA link again. It actually discusses the workouts (open gym) that start in Sept. Make sure your son attends those!

Looks like CYA 8th grade boys has several teams. I'd contact those coaches about tryouts which likely won't happen until the first week of Oct. However, often times these teams will have Fall scrimmages or workouts so the coaches get a chance to see the kids before the actual tryouts. Try to find out about these workouts so your son won't be a complete stranger when tryouts come around. Good luck!

Based on where you live, I'd think CYA would be the team your kid would try out for. A lot of these FCYBL teams have more than 1 squad (an A, B, and/or C team). I believe CYA is one of those situations where there's more than 1 team. If your child is decent, he/she absolutely has a good shot at making the team. I would encourage you to have your kid try out.

Tryouts will be tough for the top select teams, as they are filled with girls from top AAU programs (Fairfax Stars, Elevate Elite) and mid AAU programs (PVT/GYS/Hurricanes). However, there is usually lower county team under the top team that includes good players but not top AAU players. You should shoot for making one of those teams. Go to open gyms and meet the coaches and ask about the teams and openings - as others have said, some of these girls have been balling together for years, so it can be hard to break in so late in the game. But going to open gyms whenever they hold them will help

FCYBL is great. You need to try out. Many areas have several levels per grade. There is some movement between levels and some serious players opt to not play which could leave for your son on a lower level team if they have players move up. Reach out to coaches early.

FCYBL is a nice league. Get him/her in there no matter that level. You're welcome.

there is movement, but by 8th most teams are calcified. I had a kid who thought they would be cut going into 8th and probably should have, but the coach decided to keep the roster the same. Unless there is some upheaval like a new coach or a bunch of kids quitting, 8th grade teams are going to look a lot like 7th grade teams

Look at the zip code list for your zip code and try out for those teams.

But this isn’t a great league to join in 8th grade. Almost all the teams will have tryouts but not take any players at all from the tryouts. They will just keep their 7th grade team.

A parent told me this was a good fall/winter league for entry level travel. Do we register through the FCYBL website? I don't really understand the process of how a kid signs up or tries out for a team. It looks like the teams are based on where you live.
