Speak for yourself. It was a huge deal to me. I was the only one of my friends who inherited a junker car from my brother, so it was our ticket to freedom. It was awesome.

I guess it varies by individual and generation. In the days before the internet, one had to actually leave the house for something as simple as renting a video, going to the movies or buying a record album.

I vividly remember getting pulled over at 15 with only a permit! Pre-cell phones, the cop used dispatch to make me call my parents to verify that I had permission to be in my dad's car. He did not write me a ticket, thankfully.

I don't remember it at all. But I'm a trauma surviver with cptsd and don't remember much of my teen years, so YMMV.

Passing the test and getting the physical license were the same day and I remember it, but not vividly. I’m 51.

No. I think I remember the test because we had a stick shift car and hired a private instructor and car so I could take it in an automatic.
It wasn't that big a deal tbh.

I got the license the same day as doing the test. My father told me not to speed else I'd fail. The cop who did the test (real policeman) told me I needed to keep up with traffic.

No, it wasn't important to me at all. But then I lived in a capital city with excellent public transportation, so there was no rush to get a license. I got mine at 19 in anticipation of going to the US for grad school, where I knew I'd need a car at some point - and then I didn't get my own car until my first child was born.

I remember speeding down my neighborhood's street with one of my parents in the passenger seat. My parent's reaction and look on the face was PRICELESS.

Vividly? No. But I know it was the exact day of my 16th birthday. It was a huge deal for me. I skipped a grade so I was younger than everyone and the very last among my friends to drive, by a lot. All of my friends piled in my car that night and I drove them to get ice cream.

I am not talking about taking the test and passing the test.

I am talking about the day you were first given your driver's license in your hand as a teenager.
