For me, I was the repair to be good enough. Are you looking for perfection? If the door is operable? If so, this repair is paintwork. And, if the car is operable, you have time to ask your friends or local Facebook page for auto repair places to get more estimates.

If you decide not to go through insurance ask the body shop for a cash discount.
I just had a repair quoted at $1,300. They did it for $1,000 cash.

And any repair that requires paint needs to be blended. Even though your minivan is one year old the paint on it has seen the elements for one year. You would see a difference between the old and new body part if it was not blended.

Ahh ok this makes more sense thank you.

OP here.

It's a small hole on the right back door. No other body damage. They said they have to replace the door and match the color to the rest of the car (not sure why they can't just get that color door from Chrysler). The car is only a year old.

I emailed our insurance agent to see what they said.

This repair really depends on where on the car it is. If it’s just the door, it might be a smidge high. If it’s the door as well as the body then it might be correct.

Careful though. We had our car get similarly damaged. It was rear door as well as the body. The car was older and the repair amount came out to around 4500. The insurance (we were hit) decided to total the car. The car was still drivable mind you.

Get multiple quotes. That's the only way to know if a given quote is in the right ballpark.

If you go through insurance your rates likely will go up. As to reasonableness, you don’t really describe the damage and work to be done. So it’s hard to say if it’s reasonable.

Last night my dad was driving my minivan and clipped a retaining wall. I took it in to a local body shop this morning and the quote was almost 5k.

I've never had an accident so I have a few questions. Does this seem like a reasonable amount? The hole is about 3x3 inches. Should I shop this around? Are there tips for getting a better deal on body work?

Should I go through insurance? Will my rates go up? I've never filed a claim.

Thanks. All so annoying.
