In the same vein: John Scalzi. Tons to pick from but I'd start with either Old man's War or The Collapsing Empire.

The Kaiju Preservation Society was an easy fun read

I love Lies of Locke Lamora but it’s hardly what I’d call humorous? And “girl books” is such a lazy unhelpful/inaccurate way to describe books.

Jodi Taylor is also quite humorous and was recommended by Sir Pratchett back in the day.

I’m guessing he’s read Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy?

Then the Saint of Steel series picks up years later in the same world.

The writing is wonderful, nice sense of humor, and great characters. There's something for everyone in those books.

Yes to T. Kingfisher!!

Terry Pratchett is probably the standard suggestion but imo the books are a little uneven (some very good, so very broad).

Connie Willis is very good. Her latest is about people who celebrate Area 51 but she has earlier time travel books that are good too.

I’m looking for recs as a pick me up for my 20 year old nephew who is going through a tough time.

He loved The Martian, Ender’s Game, Ready Player One, LotR, and back in the day Harry Potter.

Thanks for your suggestions.
