in Fairfax County, the rec leagues have middle school travel ball in the both the fall and spring. You have to try out and have a certain skill level to make the team. Practice 2x per week and one game per week. The games are usually weekday nights around Fairfax county. Volunteer coaches and some rec leagues are more competitive than others, so experiences vary.

It is unlikely club volleyball will be possible with that tennis schedule unless you play in a regional team- then MAYBE, you would have to talk to the coach, would be very coach/team specific.

Alternatives:
ST James usually has leagues that run 6-8 weeks? All year long. I think for middle school and for high school.

Va Elite also has middle school programs- in the fall, winter and spring. Not sure what they are like - more technical ? Less actual playing? Or half and half?

People have mentioned NVVA having several “leagues” that run year round - different levels. Perhaps something like that??

You can start with the rec league, but don't expect the level to be similar to club: you will have a culture shock once you move up from rec league to club. You can find rec leagues at rec centers or rec leagues organized by clubs (again, the level will likely be lower at rec centers compared to club). As a club, MOJO is very expensive and the return on investment is quite low. Parents learn pretty quickly not to expect much during tournaments. But it might be a good choice if you have the money and you just want her to try club volleyball for a season.

My almost 12-year old daughter, is a competitive tennis player, but has also developed a real love for volleyball through playing a couple of seasons of rec volleyball and seems to be quite good at it (tennis skills seem to carry over well to volleyball!). She is interested in playing volleyball at a more competitive level as well and we love the idea of a team sport for her also, as tennis can be very lonely. However, we are trying to figure out if it's possible for her to potentially do some type of club volleyball while continuing with tennis at a high level. She currently plays tennis 3-4 days per week and plays in weekend tournaments 1-2 times per month.

Alternatively, are there other good volleyball options, at this age, that might be less costly and less of a time commitment, but would still offer her the chance to develop her skills and play at a more competitive level, before jumping into a club commitment? I was looking at MOJO's Fall Training League (and possibly trying out for the select or elite level) to give her the opportunity to play more and get a better sense for her skill level, and would appreciate thoughts on this as an option as well as other ideas. Thanks!
