I also bought a few 100% cotton dresses from H&M (online) this summer.

I have a trench coat from H&M that is several years old and often gets compliments.

My Gap t-shirts from last summer shrank in length.

I often go into H&M with high hopes and leave feeling completely deflated. Some of their prints look really pretty and appealing, but the item itself is a bizarre cut or style.

H&M online is much better than shopping in store! Gap is 100% hit or miss IME, though men’s clothes seem more reliably decent.

I actually bought two dresses from H&M this year that are 100 percent cotton. But I only shop online. I have found that the selection and quality are much better online, and many of those pieces are not available in the store for some reason. I do also find that Gap basics are pretty reliable and especially their jeans are both on trend and inexpensive, with a wide range of sizes (petite, tall etc).

You actually can still find a lot of 100% cotton items at JC Penny, and not all of it is fuddy duddy looking as one might assume. Forever 21 as well. Brands and their stereotypes don't always apply anymore.

This year, for the first year, exactly _nothing_ is 100% cotton at H&M. Not men's, not women's, nada. I know this because I walked through the ENTIRE store, flipping over tags to read fabric content and desperately trying to locate 100% cotton tanks, camis, men's t-shirts. (online doesn't interest me, but I suspect it's the same)

Both are hit or miss, even from season to season. I used to be able to count on Gap tees as a staple. Now some years the cut is weird, or the sizing is way off or they pill horribly. Then I'll find a good one again.

I think it depends on what you buy. I will always prefer Gap over H&M b/c most of H&M's stuff isn't made well and won't last longer than a season or two. But about 15-20 years ago I bought a dress and blazer from H&M that lasted years (way longer than I expected). When I donated them it wasn't b/c they no longer looked good--they still looked and fit great, I wanted a blazer with two buttons vs one.

For H&M you have to buy the items at their highest price point. Both both places are hit or miss, pretty much for whatever you buy.

I find that the style is very similar in terms of basics, but price points are different: Gap will be $35 for a long sleeve cardigan and H&M $20 max for the same article. Is Gap much better quality?
