I agree with PP's comment about taking a friend. DD's friend didn't go with us to Maldives although we asked, and she regrets it to this day. They would've had to pay for the airfare, and not much else.
What cruise? Do all or most cruises have teen clubs? That sounds great.

NP. When we invite kids, we pay everything except souvenirs. When our kids have been invited, we’ve paid airfare but mostly every else has been covered. There are no rules. But it’s good to make expectations clear in the invite

We went to OBX with friends with kids. Kids ages: 15, 15, 15, 14, 12, 12, 12, 10, 9, and 6.
Rental house cost $12,000 and we split it with 4 families paying $3K each.

Went to Italy. One liked Rome. Both liked the Dolomites.
We occasionally do beach vacations with a family we're all close with. Other than that, no friends on vacation - vacation is for us as a family to bond.

Took a short trip with my 15 year old and 10 year old. We went ziplining and all had fun.
There are ziplines in many places, but they only occupy a few hours.

+1 Yes, if you can bring one friend this helps.
Fortunately, my two teen girls who don't always get along had fun planning outfits and taking lots of pictures in scenic locations (we went to Spain this summer). They also did a lot of shopping (giant Zara, stores we don't have in the US).

If we fly somewhere, generally yes, they pay their kid’s airfare. If it’s driving to the beach, no.

We took our teens to the Mediterranean. They only used phones to take a few pics here and there and were online in the evenings. We were busy sightseeing, eating in cafes, boating and swimming, so nobody was playing on their phone.
