Definitely after the 16th birthday if possible- it will count as an adult passport in that case and be good for 10 years instead of 5. Also only need one parent to go to the appointment if they are 16.

You are totally fine. The US State Department info is not dispositive, as they do not control Italy's borders. Italy's rules make no mention of "6 months recommended". Merely "valid for at least three months after the planned date of departure from the Schengen Area."

OP again, i just checked the state department page on Shengen and The Netherland require at least 3 months after the date of return and we can back at the end of August, so we should be fine. Italy requires 3 montsh as well, and "recommended" six. I hope we wont have a problem

we are flying to Italy tomorrow with first stop over in Amsterdam. I was doing the check-in and just realized that my kid's passport expires on January 14, 2025 (kid is 15 now). i did check the passports a while ago and they all expire in mid 2025 so i thought we were fine but now I realized one will have just short of 6 months validity. there is nothing we can do at this point. how strict is the 6 month rule? how likely is that we are going to be denied boarding? we are flying KLM. I know this is my fault
