What are you trying to do with the image after you take it? If you intend to use it on the web, the resolution isn’t going to buy you much after you right size the image for the web. If you plan on printing a 40 yard picture of your daughter and have it towed behind a small plane over Stanford soccer games to get the attention of the coach, you’re gonna need a fancy camera with high resolution.

Panasonic Lumix has a decent camera with a built in zoom. There is a setting you can use that takes pictures in 4K video, and you just take the stills from that video. They come out pretty good.

IPhone is not going to give you the quality of a DLSR.

[quote=Anonymous]Find a used Canon 5D MK III with a used 300M 2.8 on FB marketplace or Adorama.com and you will shoot great photos. If you don't want to spend that much, just shoot close up shots with your iphone. (which takes great upclose shots and after game portraits). What extra money should get you is crisp clear photos when your kid is on the other side of the field DURING DAY LIGHT. (much more money for clear photos at night)

This is exactly what I have.
I also have a Nikon 5000, both are great.

300mm telephoto lens DSLR camera, used about $500-$600 = fantastic results. iPhone 13 and up with a close proximity is decent also.

It's a balancing act. The more natural light you have the better the results you will get with a cellphone. You will also want to get close to the subject, I've seen some decent results with those clip on telephoto attachments. Rule of thumb is the faster the action and darker the environment the more you will need better equipment that has the ability to open up the aperture.

What equipment people recommend to take soccer game pictures close in of your players with good resolution? Can it be achieved with a good smart phone? Or does the majority suggest using a more expensive camera and lenses?

Looking for the cheapest option that provides the best quality.
