My kid it was 6th grade but other kids are probably more mature. I didn’t think he would do anything wrong but wasn’t sure he would know what to do in an emergency.

I would have been fine starting this in 5th grade, but we never had to until 6th grade.

Age 8 I would be ok with now and again.
Every day though , maybe 10.
My 12yo has a friend we dropped off at home ( alone) last week after an outing and she couldn’t get in the house. The code on the door was jammed or something. I ended up keeping her 2 extra hours.
Make sure your kid knows what to do if where to go if they can’t get in for some reason.

NP. When I worked as a classroom monitor during Covid one of the 2nd graders in the classroom I was assigned would walk himself home every day. The school was told his parent was there working from home, but I don't think that was ever verified. At least in FCPS they can walk home alone as young as first.

Why would someone check?
In our district 2nd grade and up is allowed to leave as a walker/bike rider. What happens after that is really up to the families. Do you check that all the bus riders have parents at home?

3rd grade

For most kids 3rd, maybe 4th. Some 2nd graders could surely handle it, and some 5th graders couldn't. You know your kid and the neighborhood.

3rd grade as we have a lot of neighbors working from home nearby who would be helpful in an emergency. In my old neighborhood I would have said 4th or 5th.

If it's just once in a while, 5th grade is fine

One child, 9th grade
Other child, 3rd grade

Depends on the kid.

At what age did you let your kid be home alone after walking home from the bus after school, about 30-60 minutes?
