You're confusing "maintenance indicator" with "check engine light". The "maintenance indicator" is a glorified timer as to when some of your maintenance is due. This can be reset by your mechanic (or even you). The "check engine light" is the light that illuminates when your cars emissions system isn't working efficiently. It will produce a code that can be retrieved by a scanner. That code will clue you into the repair that is needed. (Sometimes the CEL can be caused by a loose fitting gas cap but newer cars have a separate warning for this).

You can buy a little reader and download an app to code scan yourself so you don't get scammed at the garage.

You can now buy OBD computer scanners that will work on the majority of cars on the market. Basic ones can cost as little as $30. You can connect it and find out what is causing that check engine light. IMHO, it's worth it to figure out when you need to take off work to take a car to the shop and when you don't.
