Kamala doesn't really do the dress or dramatic coats thing. She still dresses like a lawyer and I think it works for her -- tailored pant suits in bold colors with simple tops and shoes and statement jewelry that doesn't compete with her features.
She's also one of those women who has both a really striking and easily recognizable face even without a ton of makeup AND great hair. It makes her very telegenic. She of course wears lots of makeup (all high level politicians do even the men) but it just brings out her already strong features and she doesn't have to do much contouring.
Also like a lot of women of south asian and or african descent she can handle really bold colors both in her clothes and in her makeup and it never overpowers her.
She's actually got her look on lockdown and I don't think it needs any real updating for a presidential run. It helps that she has been a professional who needed to wear suits and have great presentation basically since she started working in her 20s and she's never had to present differently. Hilary had a harder time with this because she started working in a time when female lawyers were still not common and no one knew how they should dress and then she was first lady in Arkansas and in the White House and was constantly pushed to soften and feminize her look which later undermined her when she ran for office and had to find a professional wardrobe basically for the first time in her 50s. Kamala has been dressing the same for 30 years and she wears it well.
