I'd recommend a Toyota Corolla - that's what we have - except the seats are too wide/flat and make my back sore. The seats in my Mazda are more ergonomic.

Basic Japanese cars are the way to go, OP, in terms of low maintenance and low cost, but the elderly get picky and have trouble with learning new things, acceleration and vision. This means you need something that's easy to learn (commands and switches that are relatively self-evident), something that doesn't accelerate too powerfully in case they reverse when they meant to go forward or vice versa, and a vehicle with large back windows for a smaller blind spot. They might not get used to a back-up camera.

Anf they need to sit in every one and see if it's comfy enough re back problems. It's simpler if they don't need to install an extra whatnot for their seat.

Why did you repeat "elderly" so many times, like you're making some point without actually saying it? How old are they? You don't think they'll be around long? That they don't have any money? That they shouldn't be driving? What is the correlation to being elderly and having a sensible car?
