We have cameras in our basement. I could check on them if I wanted to without ever actually going down there. But I haven’t felt the need to yet. We also have a lot of kids who definitely go down there with their friends to hang out while they're down there.

When my DD first started having a boyfriend over, at 15 1/2, I'd make pop visits to the basement. "Oh hi, don't mind me I just need to get something from the freezer" visits.

Now that she's 17 I really leave them alone. Condoms are always in supply in the basement bathroom.

My parents and the parents of most of the girls I hung with always liked to make a production about their imminent arrival. Saved everyone a lot of embarrassment. One time we were surprised and it was very regrettable for everyone.

We're not "checking up", we just happen to be present and visible. Even if it means making up chores that don't really need to be done right then. They know we could walk through at any time.

Door to the basement remains open (this is our family rule), and you walk down occasionally (easier if you have a basement refrigerator or basement laundry).

Weren’t you a teenager?

As a former boy who went over to other people’s DD’s houses I strongly advise you to check. We were never up to anything too BAD, but the less likely a parent visit was the raunchier it got (and it was often a DD leading the way!).

You’re not going to stop it if they want to do it and if you do too much wandering through you will drive them somewhere else, but it’s not a bad idea to slow the pace down with periodic checks.

My 16 DD just started “talking” to a boy. He comes over to our house and they go to the basement. I tell her I will check up at any time but I rarely do to give her some privacy.

What do others do?

My DD also has time friends over boys and girls and I don’t go down to check. Small groups. Not a party. I do see them coming in. And sometimes leave.

Again what others do in this situation?

I know my DD has had seltzers but I have not caught her drunk. But she does go to parties where drinking with a plentiful.
