+1 for PIttsburgh. I just got 7:29 direct and 7:37 via Pittsburgh, so 5 min difference. But definitely not significant.

It does add about 81 miles to the trip, but the trip from DC-Pgh-Buf is all Interstates and goes faster.
The direct trip DC-Buf only goes on Interstates until central PA and then it goes on the smaller, slo8er state highways.

We didn’t the night on the way there, but we did a loop including Buffalo (naval museum, canal), Horseshoe Curve, a park on Lake Erie’s shore, and Pittsburgh. There are also some nice state parks on the way. We also went a little further & spent a day in Toronto.

The boat ride under the falls is totally worth the money. But just driving their is not worth the effort. We did it as a stop off on the drive to Toronto (where we were had to go for work reasons, probably wouldn't drive their either just for fun.)

I was the one who said Pittsburgh is too out of the way, but my other answer was Corning. We stopped their for lunch. We've been to the glass museum, it's worth seeing.

How old are your kids? What is their driving limit?

The Zippo museum in Bradford is worth a stop but not overnight in Bradford. Do plan your gas to buy it on the Reservation just out of town tho.

We just did this drive and trip to Niagara Falls. I will warn Niagara was completely overrun and is a little trashy now. Although the falls are still amazing.

We did the ferris wheel and boat trip to the Falls and both were great.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is a fantastic small town and a great place to stop/ stay to get away from the craziness of Niagara Falls.

Is Niagara Falls the ONLY reason you're making this drive?

Any hidden gems for a night halfway between DC and Niagara Falls? Our kids can’t handle the drive in one shot. We are stopping at Seven Springs on the way home for several days so would prefer not to do that on the way up.
