I just want to have an idea of whether or not I’m being ripped off by a contractor when I ask for quotes.
5k is not remotely reasonable. Look online and see how much doors you like cost. This person is ripping you off and including a ton of markup. An exterior door is a one day, one person project.

You guys are getting ripped off. Find a local handyman that will do small projects. I literally had someone install an exterior door for $500 last week. You can also buy a nice door for 1-2k at most. Just shop around for deals.

We are in the process of replacing a front door and 2 sidelights - same problem - frame is rotting/house is 40 years old/builder grade door.
Got two quotes, both were almost 7k not including labor for a Therma-Tru fiberglass door with 3/4 plain tempered glass, and 2 sidelights w/glass, wood grain finish in choice of stain. Labor was quoted to be estimated at 1k from both a local dealer and a big box store. We'll probably go through the box store because they offer a military discount of 10%.

You've noticed inflation in other costs, right? Doors are the same way. The best thing to do is get a number of quotes, because times have changed.

We did an exterior door (with frame and sill) installed for $2500 during covid. I forget which year.
