Stay away. ASA does not care for the lower teams and lacks good coaching at the top levels.

Your son is U16 and got an offer for the 4th team. It will be very hard for him to get a spot with the MLS Next squad.

Go with the coach who seems most interested and capable of coaching. There is no major skill level difference in the two teams you're discussing. He has close to zero chance to get close to MLS Next at this point if ASA put him on their 5th team.

At that age, black is the 5th team (mlsnext, red, white, blue, black) Our experience has been that commitment to the team decreases with each level. While ASA might provide a higher ceiling than your current club, the experience may differ depending on what level team you are coming from.

If he's ready to put in the work to move from the 4th team to the top team, then move him. He sounds like he has the drive and determination to want it. He may have to put up with the some of the same lax behavior from the 4th team but he may stand out if they practice alongside the higher level team

At U16, the clock is ticking. He will have to work his butt off at this point to get close to the MLS next team. You have to get your foot in the door somehow, sounds like he did, but it takes time to work your way up form the mail room 'per say.'

If MLS next level is his goal, he'll need to grind to impress the black team coach and reach out to the MLS next coach to see if he can get in on any practices. Maybe next year he can get moved up a level... but the clock is ticking! Good luck!

I’m going to say that besides the MLSnext team and second teams (red) you might not see much of a difference with play at the lower team levels with what your son is currently experiencing. But I could be wrong as I’m not familiar with the coaches/teams at that age.

+1000 his reasons for wanting to move are what you should be considering, not a strangers opinion on the team. You're about to get a flood of different opinions on ASA and why would you ever move to a 4th team. Save yourself time and focus on why he wants to move and how it will affect him if you move or not.
