That was raised as a possibility, but then enough teachers resigned or retired to make it unnecessary.

And they closed MVA. Some of those teachers took open positions at other schools (I know my school did.)

It's a good thing we did, otherwise it looks like there wouldn't be enough teachers to go around.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

This information makes sense and helps me understand the timeline better.

The Open/closed google doc shared earlier in this thread shows that are still a lot of areas (elementary for example) that continue to be closed to external candidates as of today.

So what do you mean when you say, "There won’t be any more internal transfers now, so everything left ther are hunting outside hires"?

There’s a state deadline early July to resign without prejudice (meaning you can apply to be rehired at some point without them giving you the stink-eye). That sometimes produces a last minute chunk of new positions. About a week after that they freeze internal transfers. This is to try to get fall positions to settle - principals that still have open spaces need to decide what to do, and principals with a full staff aren’t surprised by a last minute internal transfer.

I have access to the portal (though I do not, to my knowledge have an open contract), and I see 282 teaching jobs listed as of today 7/12.

There are lots of content areas that are currently closed to external candidates, but the only reason I know that is from talking to current teachers & through reading posts on forums like this.

I wish this information were better communicated on the Careers page, so that candidates new to the county could be more strategic in their search.

I’m a regular employee, and you are seeing what I’m seeing. There are 279 (now) teaching positions. If you filter on 1.0 there are 157 full time positions posted. The others are partial positions that can be cobbled together in different ways (same content, multiple schools or same school, different content areas).

The Google doc is the summary of what there are still open positions for. Everything was frozen for a few weeks in June while they dealt with the reduction in staff budgeting. There won’t be any more internal transfers now, so everything left ther are hunting outside hires.

I'm new to all this, so I'm not totally sure, but I believe the vacancies I am seeing are through the actual portal.

If I remember correctly, I believe you have to first submit a general application to be able to view the specific vacancies on the portal. I could be wrong though. Maybe there is another level of access that I am unaware of? It seems like HR prefers to share little to external candidates about the process. I wish I had known that some content areas could still be closed to external hires at this late point in the summer.

I'd say that if you can't see specific vacancies and you are a former employee, you should email HR.

Watch this for when content areas open up, this is posted on MCPS

How did you get access to the portal? I am a former MCPS employee and was told I don’t have to reapply but have no portal access either.

+1
The completely public account doesn’t show all positions available and instead has “applicant pool - English” that you apply to initially. Once you pass initial screening and get a portal account, you can then apply to specific positions.

As an external candidate, I see there are currently 179 teaching jobs posted. Are there more for internal candidates? I'm just curious if principals have the option to ONLY hire internal candidates. I've worked in a few districts like this. (We move around quite frequently...military family.) Thanks!
