He pleaded that we not call the cops. I agreed because it was a small fender bender. He gave me cash to get my bumper fixed and we went our separate ways.
This is all well and good until you find out you have more damage to your car than originally thought.

It will also catch up to her if she gets pulled over for any reason as you have to have proof insurance and registration. Its a class 3 misdemeanor in VA and a $600 fine.

Same thing happened to me - always take pictures when you turn in your tags.
I’ve also been notified by MVA on an occasion where my insurer didn’t notify MVA of my insurance. My insurer had to file a report with MVA.

You can be arrested for driving while uninsured in Maryland. My friend barely drives and she found an insurance policy that charges by the mile and is very cheap. Maybe your friend could do the same.

I'm not saying it's right, but if you're in an accident and not at fault, the payout is never enough to replace your car. If you happen to have some neck and back pain and go to a doctor and then PT, the payout is enough to cover the bills and replace your car.

Marylander here. One of my employees caused an accident and had her car impounded as she has no insurance.
She ended up losing her job as she had no way to get to work. We are in the country and she was unable to get rides.
Sadly, she overdosed on drugs about 9 months after the accident.

I have known people throughout my life who made this "decision," usually out of poverty.
OP, you are not going to talk sense into someone who simply cannot afford insurance. She is going without something she cannot afford. Do you plan to "talk sense" into her getting health insurance too?

A friend recently admitted to me that to save money she doesn’t have car insurance. This sounds like a horrible idea to me. obviously if she gets in an accident it will be very expensive. Is an accident the only way this can catch up with her? I’m trying to talk some sense into her.
