Go visit both schools. You’ll get more pertinent data that way than anything on a message board.

Yeah you will find nothing in any research to support that assertion. The rigor of the education at either school depends on the specific tracks and electives take. There are many Holton students taking a more rigorous path than Potomac students and vice versa. Both have cohorts of strong students. They have pretty different vibes though so my guess is if you tour one or the other will emerge as the favorite. Potomac has a very outgoing cohort of students and a very moneyed social climate. Holton isn’t a polor opposite in this respect. But between the two I’d choose based on social climate. You can get a great education at either.

Both schools very difficult admits especially from public. You can have all the preferences you want but might not have choices at the end of the day!!

Yes-all this tier business is totally subjective and largely created by insecure parents thinking they are better than someone else because their kid attends a certain school. Totally an exhausting race to nowhere-so glad mine have graduated!!

LOL this is so ridiculous. You're taking a random comment on the internet about Potomac being a "tier above Holton" and actually making a decision based on that. Holton is an incredible school. I don't know much about Potomac but Holton's experience is fantastic on all fronts.

Go tour both schools. See which is a better fit for your daughter. Don't make important life decisions based on random comments from an anonymous message board.

Potomac is a grind socially for introverted kids. It helps to be outgoing and sporty. DD has struggled in a sea of very socially savvy teens.

It's a strong institution, but it is not a tier above Holton.

More impressed by a person who went to Holton. Something about single sex makes it seem more serious and exclusive.
Prep, Landon, St albans, Gonzaga, Stone Ridge, Visi and Holton are the DMV elite in my opinion and I went to public high school.

It largely depends on the class cohort which will dictate the experience. It’s one of those things difficult to predict in advance so probably need to decide after you are admitted. Potomac can be a very harsh social environment in some grades. Helps to play a sport (or multiple) or have some other interest such as debate or theater. Academics are rigorous and will prepare your child well for college-Holton I’m sure does the job there as well and I’ve heard it’s good for a STEM inclined girl.

We looked at both. Academics are comparable. The biggest difference is coed/single sex education.

DD was accepted to both and had a strong preference towards the latter. She is very happy at Holton.

We are considering switching our DD (rising 6th grader) to private school for 7th grade and are exploring Potomac and Holton. We understand that our DD needs to get accepted first but we’re looking for some insight. We are relatively equidistant from both schools and comfortable with either co-ed or single gender schools.

Looking at each of their school profiles which highlights college matriculation, SAT/ACT scores, class size, teacher years of experience, they both seem to be relatively similar (Holton being better in some years while Potomac being better in others). However, it seems Potomac is more widely known or sought after. Honestly asking to understand, is this because of stronger academics or otherwise?

Can folks share any perspective on which of these two schools they’ve found to be stronger when it comes to academic rigor, college destination and readiness?
