However, the prices last year for the STJ were about $2600, SYC $2300, LMVSC$2000 and BAC $1900 respectively.

Thanks, will keep that in mind. My kid decided to go with LMVSC. Thanks for the guidance.

Good family atmosphere, well organized, should be a great experience for her!

Right, I was like is this normal to have an 8 year old try out at 4 clubs and then insistently call another club on what makes them better. I'm assuming this is U9? If this is real narrow down to the two closest to you that you were accepted at and compare how the tryouts were run. You need to decide if you want a small club or a large club. If your DD wasn't accepted at a club that has 5 teams, your probably going to be better off at a small club.

OP here. So what happened is during the original round of tryouts, my child only tried out with SYC. She kept getting called back and was being considered for one of the top teams, at least that's what we were told. She then was rejected after almost 6 weeks of leading her on. By that point, my child was so disgusted with how syc had treated her, that she wanted to reach out to other clubs to see whether there was any availability. I reached out to every Club within 15 min of our house because we were so late in the process. Four got back to me saying that they still had supplemental tryouts, and she tried out for three of them and got offers from all of them. So I'm just trying to figure out what to do from here. Don't know why I'm getting so much drama for just asking a question. Is this what I get to look forward to getting into travel soccer for the first time?

Because your DD is 8.

Top team at 8 is worthless and just for sophomoric bragging.

There are no elite 8 year olds. Puberty is the “great equalizer.”

The initial question you posed has already been answered multiple times above. Touches, coaching and convenience. Don’t overthink it, she’s 8.

OK, again, I've literally never posted here before--not just in soccer--anywhere on DC Urban Moms, and someone had told me the people here could help me learn how this works as I never was in travel sports as a kid. It costs nothing to be nice.

Have a good day.

Go with whatever club her friends will play for. It's a lot easier when you can carpool and when she can look forward to practicing with friends - especially in December when practice is under the lights and the temperature is freezing and the wind is whipping

Both LMVSC and BAC are fine. Neither are absolute top clubs, but if your DD excels, she can either play up, or move in the future.

Key is for her to have lots of time on the ball, have fun, and improve.

This^^^^^^^^^^

At 8 it’s about time in the ball, love of the game, and ball mastery. Don’t overthink it.

That said, don’t let her languish if the program isn’t focusing on those things. A lot of time the coaches at the u6-10 range get burnt out. There are 3 types of coaches in that range generally: climbers, lifers, and stinkers.

Climbers need the experience and are trying to become better coaches so they take on the juniors as they progress through their licenses.

Lifers are often solid coaches, they just love working with the little ones and not dealing with the moody ones.

Stinkers are coaches that just suck, and clubs need to fill coaching seats, so they put the ones that suck with the age groups that have the least impact on the club.

Don’t settle for a stinker, at that age stinkers kill soccer development.

Thank you for this. I went to an information session about TSJ but was pretty surprised by how much more expensive they were than the other clubs. The director and I had been texting about setting up a tryout and I texted him asking about what he thinks makes TSJ stand out such that the price is worth it and he never got back to me after that, so admittedly that left a pretty bad taste in my mouth.

Depends on ambitions and how close you are to the practice fields and if she has friends that will be at any of those clubs.
SYC is the biggest draw (highest top end team for girls in Girls Academy) but has 4-5 teams at that age. It’s hardest to get into.

LMVSC or BAC is a decent place to start.
LMVSC has 1 or 2 teams and they are in Regional-ECNL for the U13 and up teams for now. Also, I’d look into TSJ in Springfield. They probably have the best development right now for young girls in this area with an excellent facility.

All the clubs offer 2-3 days of practice w fall and spring league games in NCSL to start with 2-3 tournaments at that age. So it’s a big commitment consider the commute time to practice.

Hello folks,

My 8 year old daughter tried out for SYC, BAC, LMVSC and South County (SCCA). She got a callback for SYC but was ultimately rejected, but got offers for the other 3. I have no idea what I'm doing and was wondering what your thoughts are. Thanks!
