Not sure what your definition of remote is, but there are number that are not remote - close to shopping, restaurants, the arts…

It sounds like you don’t know very much about applying to medical school these days. Rarely do kids go straight from undergrad. The norm now is to do research or something else with direct applicability for a couple of years and then apply. So getting a great research gig at Mass General or whatever is, in fact, quite relevant

Agree, and size of town matters. Wesleyan, for example, is in the middle of a pretty quiet area of Connecticut, but Middletown has enough going on that it doesn’t feel remote. (And it’s an easy train or bus ride from New York and Boston.)

I have attended a conference there. The hygge is real at Middlebury. We had roaring fires even in summer. I loved the campus. Absolutely loved it.

I think liking skiing is very helpful. My kid visited on a beautiful winter day when school was in session, and the campus felt deserted; someone said everyone was skiing. My kid has no interest in skiing and didn’t want to be stuck on a dead campus in rural Vermont while everyone else is off on the mountain Middlebury owns.

The kid I know who goes there is noticeably not academically capable but did have connections to a dean. Not a great look.

I don’t have a dog in the fight (not the OP) but there are 14 one-star reviews out of 500+ and they are from 2011-2014.

DD of dear friends of our just graduated and had a great experience, she’s pre-med and got a pretty competitive research gig set up for recent postgrads who are planning on applying to med school in a couple of years. It’s a cute little town and a pretty campus, it’s definitely remote though, even Burlington is quite a ways away

I went there, though it was a while ago (I'm 50!) I loved it. I was a Feb freshman, and even though I was sort of disappointed not to be admitted for the fall, it was all for the best. I became close friends with other Febs (as well as people who started in the fall) and are still close contact. I grew up in a big city, so going to college in a tiny town was an adjustment, but the campus is gorgeous and it was nice that everyone was kind of stuck with each other. We would go to Burlington occasionally for a little variety. The language programs are amazing, and I was able to do a semester in Europe through them.

Any recent personal experiences? Kid definitely looking SLAC, slightly concerned about remoteness but is a skier and very progressive so culture likely fits. Rising Junior so just digging in…
