Suburban has a specialized unit. Stabilization and detox near the emergency room. And then once stable, there's a unit somewhere upstairs where people can go for a few more days if needed. I don't know if they take involuntary holds upstairs though. Doubt it. The unit near the emergency room is obviously used just for emergency situations - severe alcohol detox, psychiatric episodes - and nothing longer term. I do believe they take involuntary holds there. Meds right up front, and then once the patient is stable, they'll help figure out a plan. They're very kind and have seen everything. I'm sure adolescents are placed in a separate unit.

That's true for Suburban, too, which is a far better hospital.

Also if you have to call 911, they will go to the nearest hospital and choice will be out of your hands. If you have a preference (and they are vastly different experiences) get whomever it is to the hospital yourself.

Suburban or Georgetown

I took my 13yo DD to Shady Grove three times. Her pediatrician recommended it over Suburban. It was during the pandemic and it was crazy. Waited 3 days in the ER for a bed, along with many other teens. She got first class treatment since I was with her the entire time. Other kids never had anyone. Very sad.
