Tbh, the Feds are among at best at vacation time. Unlimited rollover for sick leave, 240 hours/30 days roll over for annual leave. And you get it cashed out if you leave.
I’ve yet to see a private sector employer with such flexibility.
I'm one of your contractors for a big firm. I get five weeks paid, all the same holidays, full telework, flexible scheduling, and more pay.

Our employees accrue 6 weeks of PTO from day 1 but we a more a smaller govcon (150 ees). We also do 15% retirement and 100% employer-paid healthcare premiums. Do you have a clearance and STEM degree, OP?

You need to think about your career trajectory. Do you yourself able to 10x your salary if you move up, which would mean possible early retirement, etc. If you are just getting like $40k bumps or something like that, maybe consider a Fed role. What is your industry? Role?

I forgot to mention that some do a holiday close the week of Xmas and or one week in the summer….. use Glassdoor as you start interviewing with companies, the info posted there is pretty accurate.

Most large F500 are at 3 weeks vacation and one week sick. Some also add 1-2 volunteer days. Some let you sell a week vacation if you’d rather have the money. Some will let you take a week unpaid if you’d rather have the time.
It’s pretty easy to negotiate 4 weeks vacation these days. That plus the other days will get you close to your 6 weeks. Don’t let a measly 5 days hold you back from the next step in your career.

Cisco. They shut down all offices the last 2 weeks of the year. They give 30 days PTO plus 10 days to volunteer. For death, divorce, moving, or serious illness they also have 12 days CTO (critical time off) which doesn’t count against your regular PTO. And 12 days annual sick leave which accrues year over year.
