Simply put, is this new adopted curriculum better or worse for rising kindergardener in the fall? He is likely to have some reading disorder or dyslexia. Any advice? He knows all letters & some phonics, but he can't decode to read any words on books, except he memorizes a few word spellings. We have tried for many years.

How is it wrong? Other states have figured out how to successfully teach ALL students to read by using methods proven by science since the Vietnam era except for Maryland.

Umm what. Plenty of states and districts had been wrongly doing balanced literacy. And if with implementing Science of reading that it still only one piece of Balanced Literacy.

I’m the PP that wrote this. A child with dyslexia will not learn to read just by being read to and need specific types of assistance from teachers which requires a specific type of curriculum. MCPS has previously refused to adopt those kinds of curriculums. Spend some time in the Decoding Dyslexia Maryland meetings to understand how long parents have been frustrated with Maryland and especially MCPS

Similar experience in K classroom with a fabulous teacher dealing with a kid who already-knew-how-to-read and was asked to "look at the picture". Plan to supplement at home or outside service if your kid is in this situation. Sad.

Our school was using fountas and pinellas and it was crap! My child literally regressed on it and couldn’t read dr Seuss books he had been reading before he started k! Meanwhile he was testing great and his teacher was thrilled because the f&p levels testing have absolutely nothing to do with reading and test kids in their ability to guess. But at home he stopped reading! Our conference was so confusing, like we were talking about different kids. It was a mess. I finally by December bought hooked on phonics and enrolled him in kumon. I had to tell him to ignore what his teacher was telling him (look at the picture, etc.). I was pissed that not only were they wasting time they were actually actively hurting his reading ability.

I don’t blame his teacher because it looked like the kids were learning something but I know kids whose parents didn’t catch on to the scam would be screwed in first or second grade when the f&p techniques fall apart. That curriculum should be banned and the very wealthy publishers sued. I don’t know what the new curriculum will be like but if it’s based on phonics that is at least a big step in the right direction.

If that were true, then why is Maryland in the bottom-10 US states for literacy education ? Worse than even Mississippi.

Maryland at the state level is phasing in a new mandatory "Science of Reading" curriculum for public elementary schools. More than just Phonics, but Phonics will be front and center. Teacher retraining is part of the plan. Goal is to move from the bottom 10 states nationally in literacy to one of the top 10.

It follows a similar initiative in other states - including Mississippi which saw dramatic literacy gains - and nearby Virginia.
