How do you not end up with a house overflowing with stuff if you behave like this? I am big into decluttering/simplifying/owning less. Sort of like minimalism-light. It stops me from buying more things too.

I love shopping, but I'm really picky. So shopping under a timeline (e.g. for a vacation or an event) is really stressful. Maybe this doesn't help if you don't find time-boxed shopping stressful...but for me thinking about how much stress I can avoid by just bringing what I already own and like would be really helpful.

OP I feel this way before every beach vacation, and usually buy a couple new things, and then I spend the entire week in my one specific swimsuit that is the most flattering, and in the same ratty pair of mesh shorts, and with the same pair of flip flops that I don't mind getting dirty in the surf. Now when I start looking through my summer wardrobe and see all those random trendy beach items I keep buying and never wearing and finally give away, I realize how futile it is. But man it took me like 10 years to get there.

I've never bought a new wardrobe for vacation. I have an edited selection of clothes that fit my needs, and I pull from it depending on my destination. Occasionally, I'll buy something specific like technical underlayers to go to Alaska. I'm as materialistic as the next consumer, but I've never understood the "what should I wear on vacation" posts. I have everything I need, and if I'm going to get something new, I'd much rather find something special or unique at my destination.

Spend some time shopping your closet for the best/most perfect items. I love finding stuff I forgot I bought last year.

Think of how much money you'll save not buying unneeded things. Then think of how people get more intrinsic satisfaction out of experiences rather than material objects. THEN, take the money you WOULD have spent on flip flops and spend it on an experience with the people you're going on vacation with. Maybe ice cream with the family, or a bottle of wine to share with friends you'll see there, or a board game for everyone to play, etc.

Think of how nice it will be not having more stuff and not spending on things you don't even really want. It's just a habit you've gotten into that doesn't make sense anymore.

I always feel compelled to spend on new wardrobe items unnecessarily for vacation. It just feels like a luxury at the time, but the reward isn’t felt as strongly once I’m ON the vacation wearing the items.

Like now, we planned a last-minute beach resort trip for next month. I have everything I need. It’s all stuff from last year that’s all in good shape, and a few things new from this year. I don’t need new flip flops. I don’t need fancy new shirts. I don’t need a new crossbody. The bathing suits I have are fine.

I don’t know why I do this when the cost isn’t worth the reward, so I vow not to do it this year, but it feels foreign. Like, I can’t stop looking online for new flip flops that I will only wear from the hotel room down to the pool and then remove them.

Give me some truth bombs.
