All coaches told my kid they wanted to see him play in person. They also want to see full games.
100% maybe one kid every now and then gets online famous enough to get attention from colleges. It's not worth invest any real time and effort, and definitely no money, into. Your kid is better served practicing at home than spending hours growing a social media presence.

Most of the kids with the fancy highlight reels look nothing like that IRL. Lmaof.
Colleges care about the team you are playing against. We had college coaches say they do not care a single bit about HS or play in lower level leagues, low ranked teams. They wanted to see how the kid played in a full game at top level...think academy and top MLSNext. They also wanted to get out to see them in person.

My kid had none. But, truthfully, no tape either because of injury.
Emails were what he resorted to. And when he finally could play fall of Senior year--sending his showcase schedule, emailing, etc. But--we aren't big on internet presence in our house and neither of my kids have SM soccer pages. The oldest set up Youtube Senior year to link his games.

Your son doesn't necessarily need a phone or social media account to contact coaches and provide videos.
If he has an email address for recruitment, something like, Yourson'sname_2026@whatevermail. This email should be used for recruitment purposes.
Set up a private YouTube channel, use the same name as the email. Your son can then send highlight videos, skill videos, etc out to coaches. The videos won't be accessed by the public on YouTube, only those he allows to see them.

My son is going on to play in college and didn't post any highlight reels, videos, etc. He's playing at a D2 school and, while unconventional, was offered a spot after meeting with both coaches and sharing some video that we had from a recent tournament.

You can also have soccer related social media and not other social media.
Limit the soccer related social media to a device that's within your control, with a password you enter. Have him work on it when you are present and supervising.

My kid got recruited at one of those college camp things. He has social media but there is no reason to believe the coach ever looked at it. MASC helps a lot of kids get recruited as well - it doesn't cost that much.

It’s never too late, but I would definitely recommend social media (Insta/Twitter) to help with college recruiting.
