Senior year. Took it with semester long Calc 3 and Linear.

You need a 4.4 if you are in-state.

You can get in with a 4.0 if you are out of state.

Same at VT --- it's a lot easier to get into VT from OOS than from IS.

I posted that admissions data and agree the yield seems suspect. FWIW, according to the CDS, in-state yield at UMD is 50% while OOS yield is 11%. If CS has a higher in-state makeup (no idea if this is actually the case) than the overall university, combined with the fact that CS has the highest yield at UMD, that could help explain a very high CS yield. But in any case, even if some of the figures are off, the take-away is that it's tough to get into CS at UMD. Your theory about terrible reach outcomes could be part of it. But for our family, UMD CS was just an excellent cost/quality combo that was tough to beat.

Data Science is a specialization within Computer Science. The degree is still in Computer Science.

Currently, there are 4 specializations that students can choose from within the Computer Science major: Cybersecurity, Data Science, Machine Learning, and Quantum Information. Students are not required to declare a specialization.

Class of 2024 UMD CS admissions changed greatly from a target freshman class of 450 to 600. But UMD includes data science in its CS school, which is usually in a different department like statistics for most universities. I’m not sure earlier info will be as helpful.

DS class of 24 in-state. Will attend for CS. 4.0 u/w, usual APs and ECs, 1550 (780 math), Honors and $4.5k merit x 2 yrs.

During 2023 open house, AO said for the class entering in 2022:
9,000 applicants indicated CS.
3,000 of those were admitted to UMD.
600 of the 3,000 UMD admits were also direct admits to CS.
450 enrolled.

These figures aren't published anywhere, so can't be confirmed.

There was an increased yield target of 600 CS direct admits to the class entering in 2024, so the direct admit number will be higher. In the UMD FB parents group, the UMD facilitator recently said that CS had the highest yield of any major or program at UMD.
