It's pretty common in most ES neighborhoods. Just letting families know now is the time to do it. Some families think they're supposed to wait until closer to the first day or don't realize age goes by school year rather than calendar year. The signs usually point out K is for age 5 by Sept. 1. In other parts of the country, it's 5 by Dec 31.

But yeah, I don't think they're advertising to try to woo parents away from private. It's a public service notice, that's all.

Parents aren’t enrolling because they are going to private school instead.

Yes, or long term subs. Our ES had 2 K classrooms start without permanent teachers last year. One classroom was added the week before school started.

I live in Cabin John-- we lived here for a few years and recently returned from spending a few years abroad.

I've noticed yard signs saying "register for kindergarten at x school" (I specifically recall Bannockburn and Seven Locks) and I'm genuinely curious-- why?

I don't recall seeing them when I lived here years ago; these are neighborhoods where parents are generally pretty involved and likely on top of registering their kids if they're planning on public school, and standard MCPS schools don't have any sort of lottery like DC, right?

It's not like a lawn sign would convince a parent who was otherwise planning to send their kid to private to choose public instead (and to my understanding these elementary schools aren't lacking students).

What's the point?
