My kids have swum in A meets for the past 9 years and we only missed 1 A meet the very first year/before we knew our kid would make A meets. Now they would be very angry if we missed.

Elite swimmers do summer season for fun, but if there is a competitive meet where they can get event times they need, they won't hesitate to skip an A meet - no matter how much the team needs the points they would accrue.
As for vacations, we've had a few kids take a weekend trip and miss a single A meet, but for the most part they don't.
