Why do top divisions and top swimmers not want to miss A meet once or twice? Are they afraid of losing their spots or potentially improving their times

All the time, but we're in NVSL division 16 and the vacations are part of why we stay down there.

Yes. My DD is top 5-ish in a couple of events and has swam both A meets so far because faster kids aren't available. We are at home this weekend and I doubt she will swim but we'll see.

Elite swimmers do summer season for fun, but if there is a competitive meet where they can get event times they need, they won't hesitate to skip an A meet - no matter how much the team needs the points they would accrue.

As for vacations, we've had a few kids take a weekend trip and miss a single A meet, but for the most part they don't.

+2. There are also several weeks until club champs meets start which allow for weekend getaways. My swimmer also starts back to school in mid August so with zones running until August 10th, avoiding taking time off that would conflict with summer swim was not a priority.

Elite swimmers do summer season for fun, but if there is a competitive meet where they can get event times they need, they won't hesitate to skip an A meet - no matter how much the team needs the points they would accrue.

That helps the swim team, for sure. Not only do we have numerous families gone, but we have swimmers that just skip because they don’t feel like swimming.

For the first two A meets I think only a little over half of the swimmers were declared available.

At our pool, the regular A meet families rarely travel until after the swim season. I hate it, as my DH cares far more about swim season than I do and I hate being limited to travel during August only.

We don’t really have “A meet families”, but families take vacations throughout the swim season.
