It won’t be a bump unless he has met with the coach and the coach has expressed interest, no matter the level.

To be clear, state level may not help at big D1 sports, but will at less popular d1 sports and all d3. Don’t expect to get recruited but will be a bump

If he is not a recruited athlete, the state level sports achievement won’t help him. I would not encourage him to apply ED anywhere that is not his first choice. I also wouldn’t focus so much on just these two schools since both are very tough admits. If he wants mid-size near a city, also consider Northwestern, WashU, Emory (all of which he has a decent shot at ED).

Prestige difference or lack thereof is not a reason to pick Columbia over Georgetown. What is humanities/econ? A double major? Econ is far from a humanities subject; it’s an oversubscribed social science.

If goal is to maximize chances to get into one, the route would be to ED to Columbia and then, upon rejection/deferral, apply RD to Georgetown. Georgetown is unusual (a Jesuit morals thing) in that it does not really favor its EA applicants in admissions.

Chances are, I hope you know, that kid will get into neither…

Georgetown's EA is restrictive; you may not apply ED somewhere else if you apply EA to Georgetown.
 
Columbia does not offer nonbinding EA; Columbia only offers ED.

He should not apply ED to Columbia if it is not his top choice.

If he loves Georgetown more than Columbia, he should not apply ED to Columbia.

You be be overestimating the difference in outcomes between these two schools for econ.

Second to PP. Columbia only has ED. Also, ED Columbia does not seem much advantage over RD. Georgetown has REA I believe? So it's going to be restrictive.

What's plausible from your HS? Do kids get into Columbia and GT?

But it sounds from what you wrote like your kid has a very strong preference for Georgetown (not "probably leaning"). So I would go with that.

Seems odd to me to ED to Columbia if it's not his first choice. Georgetown is pretty different in feel than Columbia in terms of location, the common core at Columbia, etc. Check their website, but I don't think Columbia has EA - only ED.
