It's standard practice. Especially for first-timers, there are a lot of things to consider - such as fit. The son will need to work with the doc office to make sure the lens actually fits well in the eye and doesn't slip. (If you ever had one slipping during the trial stage, it's very obvious and definitely not the lens for you.)
I do agree, if a person has been wearing the same lenses for a decade or two, the fee is simply profit. But standard practice is standard practice.
