I don’t think that it’s a mystery why Black and Jewish people with the means to choose in the second half of the 20th century would chose Maryland over Virginia. I think it’s just about politics at the state level and the neighborhood level.

The Asian population came in relatively recent waves.

The far majority moved after the world wars work--their descendants are who we know now and they are very southern culturally.

And then a lot of them moved away from the District, many to Maryland, during the race riots in the 60s.

That is incorrect. This is when whites left the city to move to PG County (yes large portions of PG County were white until the 70s and 80s). Many of the whites who had not lived in the richest part of the city were migrants from Appalachia who move here for work after WW2

Francis Preston Blair had a plantation in Silver Spring and had enslaved laborers. It was called Silver Spring Mansion.

When Jews started moving out of the city (https://ggwash.org/view/77533/exodus-why-dcs-jewish-community-left-the-center-city-then-came-back), Maryland was definitely more socially and politically liberal, as well as physically closer to the cities north, with larger Jewish populations.

African Americans have lived in Prince Georges County for hundreds of years.

Belair Mansion ran as a plantation and had enslaved laborers.

NP. This is a bizarre post with bizarre reasoning.

True although recall that Maryland was a slave state.

Virginia was deep south. Read up on your history going back to the Civil War (or as it is known in Virginia....the War of Northern Aggression.)

This. It literally goes back to the Civil War, then Jim Crow.

That said, Maryland and the District itself also had Jim Crow laws, segregation, and racial covenants. But Marylanders and District whites were - generally - less violent toward blacks, Jews, and Catholics than their Virginian counterparts at the societal level.

Arlington has/had a large Vietnamese community. Mostly the second generation moved farther out, which is why the legendary Four Sisters restaurant moved to Mosaic District before eventually closing in 2023. Eden Center still thrives.

Real talk — why is NOVA more white / asian / middle eastern, and Maryland is more black / latino / Jewish? I’m a DC area native and admittedly don’t understand the dynamics behind this, but maybe it’s just ignorance due to my age or family history or whatever. Whats the deal here? It’s definitely noticeable.

Growing up for instance, I went to private school in Upper NW. Literally all of the black kids lived in Silver Spring, Bowie, and a few others. Every single Jewish kid lived in MoCo — their families would never live in NoVa not a single one of them. As for the white kids the majority lived in NoVa (McLean, Alexandria, Arlington), but some lived in Chevy Chase village. Asians and middle eastern kids all lived in NoVa.

Can anyone explain?
