I thought address was determined by mailbox location. If you don’t move the mailbox the address stays the same.

OP. Called Fairfax zoning planer of the day. We can keep our current address after we relocate the driveway.

No, address is determined by the plat.

Not true at all. We have a corner lot in our neighborhood that was originally 100 center street (and you drove in to face garage, front door to the side) and they moved it by putting in a perpendicular driveway on a new street to 99 north street, on the front door side.

They had to get permits but not sure about the post office clearances and all that. New address for sure.

Required? no, we changed our address living on a corner lot it was very easy. we did it ourselves and we are in Montgomery county

a reputable company will get your permits. the usually do it after the job and get all their permits once a month because the county or jurisdiction lets them batch things. many fence and deck businesses do that.

We had a family do this - I am pretty sure they did not get the permit. Because a few months later the County put up huge highway barriers to prevent the use of the driveway. Not sure the fines or penalties involved but it was an eyesore. Took 18 months for it all to be resolved and now they have it but are not allowed to use it.

Permits matter for driveway connections!

OP didn't ask about a permit for the driveway.

Usually the mailing address is determined by the legal plat on file at the city/county. Local government and USPS might not allow a change.

I live on a corner lot in Arlington and my driveway is behind the house on a different street. I can think of at least half a dozen homes in my neighborhood with this same set up. I believe the address is where the front door is located.

Atty? Not really. Just get the permit for the new driveway.

The driveway doesn't have to be on the street with the address. Tons of corner lots have the driveway on the side. (OK, there's probably an outlier jurisdiction or two that likes to be super weird this way.)

OP, where do you live? You may not be legally allowed to do this.

A corner lot, currently the driveway is off a big road, like to relocate the driveway to the side street. Am I required to change my house address?
