I am considering something similar with my family for next summer! My kids will be 7 & 10. We are exploring staying in one location for 1 month and maybe spending another week traveling around.

It depends on what you and your kids enjoy doing, but I think London would be fun if you can afford it. There's so many wonderful parks, museums, markets, and probably summer festivals/events and restaurants to explore. You could easily spend a summer there and do some day trips and then do some travel elsewhere around England. I would want to explore some other areas of England....the Lake district is gorgeous, there's lovely beaches on the coast of England (though I don't think there's super warm!), and you are just a short train ride from Edinburgh. There's also tons of cheap flights from London so you could pick a spot to do another little trip.

I have been looking on airbnb and there is often a substantial discount if you rent for a month and for my family, that is a big motivation to pick one place and also just have a slower pace. I have NOT seen a lot of affordable places in England though. I was looking at under $2,500 for a month lodging.

My kids also enjoyed the camps at Marlborough. Unless you can take the summer off i would look into doing something like that at least part of the time.

If budget wasn't an issue, it could be fun to run a flat in London for June-August to enjoy the city's daily life, visit museums and see the plans, and go on long weekend trips perhaps every other weekend for 3-4 days to various parts of the UK. It'd be useful to have a clear focus of what you want to see on those long weekends.

The one down side is I can see kids getting bored after a while and missing their friends.

You can still do camps and stuff overseas when you want a break from full-time touristing. We're doing this for 5 weeks this summer (but in Asia).

Yes, of course people do this in the UK and in other countries. There are tons of groups on facebook for people living or travelling out of their home countries (Two Fat Expats, Adventurous Global Travel with Kids etc. ) I imagine you can find a group for expats living in the UK.

You'd be better off sending your kids to Summer camp like the one at Marlborough school and staying nearby / doing your trips around that.

I'm from England and have spent many summers there with my kids (we live in the US) and just touring for that entire time is going to be boring for them.

We've done this a few summers now in various cities in Europe. We just use AirBnB and have had no issues. We usually do 3 weeks at a time in one area and then move to a different part of the country for the rest of the time. Depending on your budget you may not find someplace to stay the entire time this late in the game. But if you don't mind breaking it up a little between places you should be fine.

No visa needed for the summer. Just negotiate an extended stay at a BRB although a little late to do that for this summer

My DW and I have 2 DD's, 13 and 9 and have been to England twice now in the last few years. I thought it'd be cool if we figured out a way to stay in England for a summer (when school ends -> the week before school begins in August). Has anyone done something like this (i.e., "live" in Europe for a summer)?

My first thought would be to get an apartment/house near/in London, and then do little weekend trips, throughout the UK.

Where do I start even exploring this, and what would be the process here? Is there anything important/concerning that I should vet out first? Assumption here is that I can make it work with my employer (which I think will be doable).

Any guidance on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
