My ES and MS had "graduation" with a party (ES) or dance (MS) back in the 80's. So, long time ago.

I graduated HS in 1998, so grew up in the mix of 80s and 90s. I don't remember any of this nonsense. You only graduated from HS and College. You "finished" kindergarten, 6th grade, 8th grade, etc. You weren't "promoted."

I graduated HS in 98 also and had Kindergarten graduation, 5th grade promotion, and 8th grade graduation.

Another '98 grad here. I had an 8th grade graduation, but not 5th or K. Although I went to a K-8 for 2-8th so that was likely why we didn't do 5th grade.

My DD is about to "graduate" preschool. I have zero issues with it. She is incredibly excited and I think it helps with the transition to K in the Fall and making that an exciting time vs a scary time.

Snowflake thinks they're special for being "promoted" to 8th grade.

You could say the same thing about high school graduations, yet we've had those for as long as we've had high schools. My kids will spend 7 years in the same ES, 2 in MS, 4 in HS, and 4 in college. To me those 7 years mean as much as the 4 in high school.

This is a stupid response. We have parties all the time for thing that aren't about anyone being "special." It's not special to have a birthday or an anniversary or be a mother or a father. You have a party to celebrate the end of elementary or middle school because it's the end of a phase of life and you're moving onto something new, not because "snowflakes" think it's "special."

Sometime before I graduated from elementary school in 1984.

Technically the kids are promoted (to the next grade level) every year. They only graduate in high school and college. 5th and 8th are special promotions because in most cases, it means they are going to a new school. My kids didn't have pre-K nor Kindergarten promotions so I can't speak to that one.

I grew up in the 80s and 90s and we definitely had promotion ceremonies in 5th and 8th. But I went to Catholic school so maybe that's different.

A lot of our 8th graders will never have a graduation so it’s a huge deal.

They darn well better graduate from high school!!! Pretty low expectations!
I was shocked by HS graduation celebrations, how extensive they were, but someone reminded me it's really more about one of life's milestones.
