Which DCPS is cutting Mandarin? Still going strong at Deal/Jackson-Reed if you are in that feeder pattern. JR even added an extra level for next year. Mr. Zhi keeps putting off retirement at Deal which keeps the program stellar.

Sidwell has a Chinese Studies Program.

“Founded in 1983 in honor of John Fisher Zeidman ’79, the Chinese Studies Program includes language, history, and culture curricula in all divisions of the school, as well as an alumni fellowship program, a student exchange program, student travel to China, and an annual lecture series.”

SSSAS. This now starts in sixth. Upper School program is run by Daniel Lowinger, and they have an exchange agreement with a school in Taiwan.

I would be very surprised if a school with a class labeled Chinese was teaching a non-Mandarin dialect.

We are in Bmore where DD has been taking mandarin since 2nd grade at school and also does a lot of enrichment. . If you cannot find a school program, some other options to consider are 1) the Concordia summer immersion camp. Go for 2 weeks - 1 week not enough; 2) look for STARTalk programs. DD did a year long program through UConn - 2 semesters (online) and a 2 week summer immersion. Got 6 college credits. Free.
3) CTY offers very strong year long mandarin programs.

Not the most convenient for you but I know Bishop Ireton in Alexandria offers Mandarin.

Do any local privates offer Mandarin in middle and high school? We are hearing that our local DCPS is cutting funding to Mandarin and that the language may no longer be available when my 6th grader reaches high school. My child loves Mandarin and is interested in continuing it (school-level, not a native speaker or particularly advanced just really enjoys it).

We are considering private for high school anyway, and this wouldn’t be the only criteria, but are interested in what our options might be. We live in NW DC. Thanks!
