The website says HS seniors can take 2 courses per semester at UMD.
It may be a way to get access to advanced courses not available in MC Dual Enrollment, for students who logistics
ally can't attend a magnet HS.
But it's in person, so may be impractically to commute to during school year.

What advanced classes are you talking about. It isn’t like you can take a 300 level biology class right away. Montgomery college has most of the prerequisites for the advanced classes. It would not make sense to turn down a free program just to take basically the same class at UMD.
Math and Computer Science, mainly. SMACS magnet has more advanced courses that aren't available at other schools. MC doesn't have these courses; they have an offering of more applied/career-oriented courses.

Where MCPS would come in is if you wanted the courses to count towards graduation from HS: you'd need to get permission ahead of time and I have no knowledge of whether it would be granted (although I have a hard time imagining not). My university department (not UMD) always has a few HS students in our summer courses. They tend to do pretty well. But when they occasionally show up in regular school-year courses (in person during the fall and spring semesters) we do not have a program or office of any kind to mentor them or help them navigate the university systems. I'd check on that before just deciding to drop a kid in. If they have trouble academically, how do they get help? Will they need a university ID to enter any buildings, including libraries? Can they use the university transit system, and if so, how? How do they get help with digital systems and processes? Professors often don't have answers to these kinds of questions, and HS students are a lot like young freshmen...who never attended freshman orientation and have no on-campus experience. It's obviously something that can be dealt with, but there is advance planning needed.
