The only thing that came to my mind is "Henny Penny", and that is because of that one episode of the Golden Girls. In the episode, the 1st graders that Dorothy teaches were supposed to put on the play but they were quarantined because of measles. So the four women put on the play. Henny Penny is that children's book where an acorn falls on the chicken's head and the chicken decides the sky is falling and she must go tell the king.

Bathe the Cat. Two parents, two kids (plus a baby that can be played by a doll). And a cat, who could be played by a sock puppet.

-has 3-4 main characters that are all equally exciting
-has a story arc, meaning a problem is presented and solved (so not a book where 3 characters are presenting the alphabet for example)
-engaging for kids ages 5-8

My kids want to put on a play this weekend.
