I'm not a doomsday person but with the very recent reports about kids getting sick and hospitalized after swimming at Lake Anna, I certainly wouldn't go in the water THIS weekend or for a while afterwards

We were at the lake the same weekend those kids got sick. My 15 year old and her 4 friends swam and rode tubes all day long. No one got sick but we were in the middle of the lake/ deep water.

We've rented homes on Lake Anna a few times, we just don't swim in the water (we rent boats, go fishing). But not because of the nuclear reactors. Similar to many lakes and rivers in this region, Lake Anna water quality suffers from farmland run off impact. So that's an ongoing issue that some ignore, and others pay attention to. I remember the first time we rented a place on the Shenandoah back during COVID and I read that there was a do not swim advisory in place. At which point I did some research and found out this farmland runoff issue is a widespread problem along with algae blooms and such.

Bottom line. While they say it's probably ok to water ski and go tubing since you spend little time actually in the water, we just don't risk it. Given the recent sicknesses reported, I'd be even more skeptical about letting my kids swim in the lake.


Yes it’s an ongoing problem. Not worth the risk. In general, don’t go anywhere near one of these lakes if you have any sort of cut on your skin.

"Two children released from hospital after Lake Anna trip, health officials investigate"

LAKE ANNA, Va. (7News) — Two of the four children hospitalized after a Memorial Day Weekend trip to Lake Anna are out of the hospital, the parents told 7News Health and Wellness Reporter Victoria Sanchez.

7News was the first to report on “lab-confirmed cases” of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli bacteria contracted by children who were at Lake Anna. On Friday, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) said it was looking into where the bacteria originated from. The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and the VDH Office of Epidemiology are also investigating.

I would not let my kids swim in it after hearing about the children hospitalized. Not worth the risk. I’d skip as I would be paranoid all weekend.

It depends on where you are going. You need to be more specific about the report.
