Not Hermes though. Craftsmanship is still excellent. The problem is that the price is not worth it. There are bags with similar or better craftsmanship that are much cheaper.

I have a small black gucci Jackie Notte bag. I love it and save it for special occasions and when we visit our kid who lives in NYC. It dresses up/completes any outfit and it is very subtle. I will leave it to my daughter and that’s one of the reasons I got it. (Not Hermes or Chanel but sort of close ). The luxury is mostly for me - there is no obvious logo. But it’s beautifully made and feels special.

I received a Chanel bag from my parents as a gift. It's really nice, but not the bag I reach for daily (I'm usually sporting a straw market bag or my Dragon Diffusion Santa Croce).

It feels a bit conspicuous and I also get a bit nervous about being a target, but I'm grateful to have one as an heirloom.

I love horsey stuff too! My Hermès Picotin looks like an elevated feed bag and is the perfect bridge for my worlds

I can afford them but will not carry or display expensive purses or jewelry since they can make you a target for thieves.and home invasions.

Hermes is a tier above Chanel. Hermes is still hand sewn and truly does have quality construction.

The leather is not the same as Kate Spade or Coach bags. I don't disagree that they're overpriced, but they are higher quality.

Right! Everyone has their hobby and invests in what they like. I bet this poster appreciates a leather saddle of the finest craftsmanship. Or riding gear that will hold up with a certain aesthetic.

People find pleasure in all kinds of material items and handbags are just one item on that long list. For designer bags it is often the artistry, the history, the craftsmanship, the quality, the styling, the practicality etc. that appeals to the consumer.

The leather feels very nice and the buckles and turnlocks work really well with satisfying sounds

I have a Chanel bag that belonged to my mother. I would never buy one on my own because can’t imagine spending so much on a purse. But I love periodically using it when I go to nice events. I think it’s a beautiful looking bag but I prefer a more casual looking bag for everyday use.

I don’t own either. I take no issue spending more for high quality items not made in sweatshops. I do love the classic Chanel flap bag aesthetic- but you are paying for the label, not the quality. Don’t get me wrong, the quality is wonderful. But you can only make a leather bag so well- there is a cap to quality.

I think the women that buy them and carry them, especially if they own multiple, see them as art. The are collectors of wearable art.

Do you own these? What makes you want to carry them? Is it more aesthetic or a social signal? Something else?
