My kid graduated from WJ last year. It was so packed. Coming out of a meeting with a teacher one day, when the bell rang to change classrooms, I got swept into a tide of students and had to elbow my way against the flow to leave the school. The corridor was literally wall to wall people. There are one-way staircases, so that people won't jostle each other too much when going up or down. If there's a real emergency one day, there's going to be a stampede and people will be crushed.

My other kid is at BCC, which is so much more manageable.

So yes, I certainly hope that Woodward will reduce congestion at WJ. It was created in part for that, so it had better help!

Sure if by DCC you mean the other adjacent schools like Wheaton, Einstein and BCC.

It doesn’t matter what I mean. The CIP since Woodward first appeared in it has said WJ and DCC

OP here. Thanks, everyone. I can see them not having exact data because they don't know the boundaries yet. But, I thought I've seen estimated numbers before - or at least the expression of the idea that the new high school would just handle the expected increase in growth for WJ.

What makes no sense to me is the projection that Ashburton will only go up by 40 kids, when that whole Amalyn development is being built on 75 acres. That seems low. Plus Ashburton can't handle more kids. They ought to send those kids to Wyngate, which is underutilized and redraw the boundaries to send more kids to Wyngate to use it up to capacity and take the pressure off Ashburton.

There had been hedging by MCPS, discussed in other threads, away from more direct DCC relief. We'll have to see what the boundary study recommendations are, but I wouldn't be surprised if it left DCC with less relief than the WJ/WW/BCC combo, especially when considering the likely effect of the infill development initiatives that the county is presently pushing, where inner DCC properties present developers the lowest hanging fruit.

They are always two steps behind. Building infrastructure, teacher shortage, enriched programs, novel studies novels, bus tracking app, school lunch waste (just now some schools compost), lack of soap in bathroom (yes it is true), rationale for snow days etc.
They needed new HS s years ago! To have 800+ people in a building designed for how many? Is that even allowed - fire code violation?

This is why portables get added. Though the portables ultimately take up space meant for other uses. It’s also what makes security more difficult.

MVA students and instructors who are using/teaching MVA because of health and medical reasons should be able to move into a building designed for people who are struggling medically if they no longer get the option to attend in virtual.

But years behind in getting a Woodward to do exactly that. They should already be planning for the next build now that MVA is going away. Or create a more defined partnership to use MC campuses for HS teaching and learning.

Appendix E is most applicable, but others can help provide context. The main body discusses Woodward reopening. Since they have not decided on the boundaries yet, the shifts from WJ to Woodward are not yet in the tables, but the presumption is that WJ will be the lead beneficiary.

The WJ and DCC chapters in particular will have some helpful numbers:

I could’ve sworn I read, but it’s been awhile, that the new Woodward High School - when it opens -, is only going to address the projected increase in enrollment at Walter Johnson High School (ie, so it won’t keep going up and becoming more overcrowded than it already is). But now I can’t find anything that says that or even what the projected number of students at WJ will be in the years to come, accounting for Woodward.

WJ is already at 3,000+ kids, more than 800 over capacity. I’ve heard it’s a big problem (no surprise). Part of me hopes the new high school will fix that, but I’m not sure. I know projections are just guesses into the future, but it’s all we, parents of younger students in MCPS, have right now.

Anyone have or know where to find projected enrollment data for down county high schools, like WJ, for once Woodward opens?

Thanks!
