Helps make their vision better.

People who do this have never learned to control their frustration and prefer to externalize it by taking it out on others.

Some parents and coaches could benefit from a Calm Down Corner like they have in preschools.

I’m both a parent and a NCSL coach, and have reffed in the past. A few thoughts.

- The field is often loud, the distances can be far, and you’re not allowed to enter the field to get close to the ref. You often have to yell to communicate.

- Yelling about calls happens in virtually every sport, at every level. Ever watch a basketball or football game?

- I never yell about throw ins. That’s stupid.

-Yelling should be about a call, and should never include personal attacks.

- Refs miss things all the time, or are unsure. They’re human, and others often have angles the ref doesn’t have. If they see a shot in the box and it hits off an arm, but they’re not sure whose arm, if one coach is yelling for a handball and the other is not, that can influence them.

- Especially at uLittle, I can’t count how many times a ref does not know or apply the rules correctly. Build out line is always the worst, but I have had refs forget there is no offside before the build out line (and call it just past midfield), forget keepers can’t punt, not stop the game after the ball hit someone in the head, etc.

- I’ve also seen some biased behavior (intentional or otherwise), and am going to call it out. One ref at uLittle was letting one team retake bad throws, but their opponent had to turn the ball over every time it happened to them. I had a game the other day where there were multiple handballs in the box by one team, with the ball hitting a defenders forearm which was above their shoulder in each case. Never called. End of game, a midfielder passes back to my defender in our own box. Defender goes to play the ball, it hits a bump in the grass and caroms off the top of her foot into her bicep, which is at maybe a ten degree angle to her torso (ie a natural one). PK that tied the game. You can bet I yelled.

This is the only time I yell at a ref. When we are out of subs because of how many kids are injured by the other team, it’s time for them to take note and keep the kids safe, for the younger kids at least.

The only time I have ever yelled at a ref is when I felt safety was an issue - not about calls that would only affect winning/losing the game. But I have seen situations where fouls were essentially devolving into a physical brawl (both our fault and the other teams) and the ref was saying nothing. For that, I would yell, "hey, ref, this is a safety issue."

+1 some refs even go so far as reversing calls after they are made. Those refs should be banned after pulling stunts like that.

This. They're trying to intimidate the ref into making more favorable calls for their team during the remainder of the game.

I've spoken to guys that ref on the side in many sports; they will admit that if they feel a bit of doubt about a call they made against Team A, they will make a mental note of it and look for an opportunity where it's a close call and they can err on the side of a call that favors Team A later on.

The screaming and outrage and indignation that obnoxious parents engage in is an attempt to create or magnify any sense of doubt in the ref about a call that went against their team.

Because it is modeled so beautifully and admired as a fine character trait and strategy at highest levels of power. Playbook is yell and say all is unfair the system is rigged (unless of course you are winning!) and chances are you’ll wear people down.

If it takes too long to wear them down, encourage people sympathetic to your cause to become refs! And, of course this is easiest with female refs who you can “grab by the @:$$/:”

Because people think they are allowed to have temper tantrums out loud. It's amazing.
