Our middle school had so many different types of awards. Even for someone who read 615 books or something.
Last year in Elementary, a girl got an award for being nice and always greeting everyone with smile So maybe you should move here. FCPS

I grew up in the Richmond area (graduated high school in the mid-90s), and all of the school systems down there (Henrico, Hanover, Chesterfield) awarded the top performers. Always. There were no awards for the "average" kids just chugging along doing their best, unless you count perfect attendance.
Not sure what you're looking for OP, but this isn't new, or confined to LCPS.

I actually think it's a good thing. So many kids aren't get rewarded at all for grades, which is the purpose of school. Trying hard is great and so is being nice, but they aren't what school tests you on.

Not sure where you are moving but let me be the first to congratulate you as someone who moved both my kids out of Loudoun for this school year. I went to their middle school awards ceremony this week. Night and day difference from LoCo. Don’t believe those here who are only speaking from the perspective inside the DC bubble. Nowhere is perfect but my kids are a hell of a lot happier and so are we! I wish you and your family the best. If you’ve found a more balanced area it will feel like a weight has been lifted off your chest.

Our middle school had their awards last night and kids were recognized for all kinds of things - not only academic excellence but improvement, good character, modeling citizenship, upholding school values, etc. My kid who REALLY struggles in math and has an IEP for her learning disability that profoundly affects her math skills was awarded, not because she has all A’s in the subject (she doesn’t, she hasn’t even passed the math SOL most years) but presumably because she shows up each day and tries and tries at it even though it is really fckn hard for her! If you’re mad about your kid not getting an award, I’d challenge you to sit with your feelings about that and why you feel all kids deserve awards.

OP if you think this is limited to LCPS you are woefully naive.

Gainesville High school in Prince William county gives awards quarterly (called "Cardinal Callouts" ) and at the end of the year (called "Radiance Awards" based on their four pillars of Learning, Leadership, Caring, and Creating. Cardinal is the school's mascot and a group of cardinals is called a radiance--that's why the end of the year awards are called radiance awards.
By having these categories, there is definitely room for student who do not necessarily fit the "perfect grades every year" mold to be recognized.

This is a complaint about the way our society recognizes effort and work, not a school district.

I mean, for those in basic classes maybe. I will say that several of my kids friends are in high school level classes and it seems challenging.

I'm more interested in when we stopped rewarding improvement and determination. My kid will challenge themselves to try (and sometimes fail) at something vs just taking the easy A

No, honors/advanced classes in LCPS middle school are really easy. My kids were not challenged until AP’s.

OP, you are not going to find what you are looking for in another school district.

Awards are not supposed to go to average or mediocre performers. Be thankful your child has high-performing peers and help DC learn those values. It will help DC in the long run.
