There should be a number listed on the temporary license to call if you do not receive the official license in a certain time frame. You now will need to make an appointment with DMV to see next steps or go online and see what DMV says about expired license.

What a waste of time. Why make you jump through those hoops after you already went to the 90 min session together. I’m glad Fairfax got rid od the court dates.

Either they didn’t file or it was lost in the mail. The DMV will issue you a new one. My kid completed his final BTW session in mid May. His license arrived in the mail last week. Fairfax County.

Yes this happened to us. Luckily realized it before the temporary expired but it was close. Had to go to DMV to have them reissue temporary so she could still drive. We're in Arlington so the physical license is sent to the county and you have to watch a safe driving video and send a letter attesting that you watched it before they will send you your license in the mail. Not sure what happens if the temporary has expired but I wouldn't let them drive.

OP here - dc completed btw at 16 and 8 months.

So good to drive on her own as soon as she completed btw. Instructor said the paper acted as her license until the real one came in the mail, and it would take a while.

So we literally all forgot about it until this week. Now this temporary license is expired of course.

We’re going to the DMV tomorrow, but my guess is btw instructor dropped the ball as he had admitted to being short staffed with his admin help.
We also see he didn’t date his signature on the temp license.
He hasn’t returned our call yet.
Thanks for the replies! Its true it could have gotten lost in the mail ugh!!

Our DS completed BTW in November and was given the piece of paper. He could officially drive early March and the hard copy license was in the mail within a week of his official "can drive by himself" date.

OP, when could your kid drive by themselves? Did they finish BTW way before that date?

We’re in MD so things work differently but is it possible it was lost or stolen in the mail. My son’s learners permit never arrived but thanks to USPS informed delivery I could see that it was in the mail. When it was a few days late I called our local post office who said they had lots of reports of missing mail from MVA. We had to go to MVA and have the learners permit reissued which was a pain. This time I spent extra money to have it sent with a tracking number.

My kid completed behind the wheel last August - the instructor handed dc a piece of paper he signed and said it was a temporary license and the real one would show up the mail, and it may take a while.

So 10 months later we realize the license never showed up and the temp license is expired. Ugh!

I suspect the driving instructor didn’t do something on his end to alert DMV that kid completed behind the wheel.
We’ve reached out to instructor.

Anyone else run into this cluster?
