Holy smokes! I always thought these were bright sun plants. I always wanted to plant these (I think I'm a good gardener, but I am utterly awful). I will definitely try this!

They do much better with hydration and shade. I moved mine from east facing to north facing, and they took off. The east facing area had tree coverage, but still received a lot of heat during the day.

I accidentally planted a hydrangea in full sun a few years ago. I finally moved it to the shady majority of my yard this past fall and it went from struggling and barely alive in the sunny spot to finally producing gorgeous blooms this spring.

I would plant something else there that likes sun. Lavender? Rosemary? Or look up the native sun loving plants. I'm actually jealous since my yard is mostly shade. Here are some good ones for Virginia:

They should be fine if they are kept well watered.

Mine are all on a west facing area so they get the hot afternoon sun. They seem to love it BUT keep in mind - hydrangea = hydration = needs lots of water. If you are planting in a hot dry area make sure to mulch and water deeply.

They need shade mostly, although there is one variety that is okay with a lot of sun. If you don't have that variety, I would plant some knockout roses instead.

Gardening noob here: I am about to plant some hydrangea bushes in a bare area for them to fill in. The area is south facing and is drenched with sun pretty much all day long. Will my hydrangea grow well here? Or do they have to have some shade?
