Our notification was also vague, so I followed up with our AART. My takeaways:

1. The Level 3 pull-outs are generally one hour per week, but could be more or less. Level 3 encompasses all subjects. I view it as "creative learning" time similar to Level 2 pull-outs, but on a more consistent basis.
2. The other factor for Level 3 is clustering. The school will try to place a small group cohort of Level 3 kids in each class -- meaning that the teacher can also differentiate lesson plans and give "advanced" work to that group.
3. Advanced math is a separate thing from Level 3. It will be based on a pre-test at the start of the year, teacher recommendations and other data (perhaps i-ready scores?). I gather that the group selected for Advanced Math won't start meeting until week 3 or 4 or so of the new school year. Advanced math means that all of the kids who qualify will "switch classes" for math time, and advanced math will be taught by one designated teacher. You would think that many Level 3 kids would also qualify for advanced math, but it is a separate process.

I’m not contradicting you, but our AART said that it’s progressive, meaning that L3 services include at least what you’d get in L2. It’s intended for kids that “need” advanced academic instruction in all core subjects vs. just the subject- specific differentiation that comes with L2. In other words, L3 includes advanced math. Wonder which one is accurate?

Kids can be added and dropped from LIII throughout the year, my sons class has seen some real fluctuation in LIII. Some of the fluctuation is caused by kids who end up struggling in the subject that they are missing for LIII pullouts.

Advanced Math seems to be based on Iready scores, past performance in math, and some form of test given at the begining of the year to see where kids are that is not the iReady. Once they are taking the SOL, SOL scores are included in the formula.

They are not going to tell people what they are looking for because they know telling people that will lead to gaming the system. The schools want to evaluate kids and place them where they belong based on interest and ability and not promote acceleration for accelerations sake. And yes, there are plenty of parents who are trying to game the system. Kids in AAP or Advanced Math should not need tutors to stay on pace with the class and yet we know that there are kids who need tutors to keep up with AAP or Advanced Math.

Thank you, this is helpful - if only all AARTs would provide this type of information! Did they mention the name of the advanced math test?

No, I didn't get too many details on the pre-test. The AART was emphasizing that (at least at our school) they take a holistic approach as to who qualifies for advanced math. However, it also could change every quarter. If a kid not originally placed in advanced math is doing well in the general class -- or alternatively if a kid in advanced math is really struggling -- they reserve the right to make those changes and modifications. I think that's why there's no formal designation for it (like Level 3) because they want to reserve the right to make changes on a quarterly basis if certain kids need advancement and/or need to be placed back in the general class. It seems to be a fluid situation.

Why such disparity between notifications for level II, level III, and level IV AAP classes?

Level II, Level III, and Advanced Math are determined by the individual school.

Principal Placement into LLIV is determined by the school.

LIV is determined by a Central Committee.

Because they are decided by different people, they are released at different times.

I mean: shouldn’t they all go out on the same date?

They aren't decided by the same group or at the same level. Level IV is a central committee,. LII and LIII are decided by the school.

I would contact your school's AART and ask when the notifications are going out. At our school, they went out last Friday, 5/31. I would not be surprised if some schools are sending them out this week.

I think notification varies by school.

Do schools send out rejections or should I assume that since I did not receive an acceptance email, my child did not get in?
