My kid is confused and is unsure what to choose. Sometimes DC says they want to be a writer/author. Sometimes DC shows interest in Science related stuff. DC is a Math loving kid. If DC got Clemente this would be a no brainer and DC would have chosen Clemente.

Re: commute, it takes us 35 min to Parkland and 25 to MLK. Parkland now offers a central bus service (since last year) and DC can catch that bus from home school or a nearby elementary school.

If we were thinking of the future, what kind of jobs do people who study Humanities do?

DC has a 260 on Map-M and a 229 on Map-R.

Any jobs. All jobs. There are no jobs where studying Humanities is a disadvantage.

It will not be a disadvantage, yes. But what is the point of doing Humanities English, History and Media if you want a job in tech. I'm trying to figure out which school is a better choice since DC doesn't want to make the decision.

Re the career question, a specialty in middle school does not put them on a track for a humanities career. They will still have the standard science classes and then can switch it up for high school and focus on science or not. This is one of the dumb things about MS Magnets in MCPS in my opinion. Very few 5th graders have such a strong preference

I was looking at the presentation video and they say that if you want to be on the IB track for RM, kids should take world language in MS. Is it good enough if DC takes in 7th grade or just one year in 8th grade?

We toured Parkland and liked it. Since we just got the invite for MLK, we haven't been able to tour it. I guess I could ask for a tour.

DC has no preference between these 2 schools since DC is more a Math nerd.

Both options have transportation. The MSMC schools added transportation a few years back, and MLK always had transport.

For magnets - Eastern MS Takoma MS, yes. For choice special programs - we arranged car rides.

The choice magnets are now offering bus transport at certain stops. We got a survey saying there will be bus transport and the survey was to fill out which route and stop we will be choosing among the ones listed. There is one bus going to Hallie Wells in Clarksburg. Another goes to Montgomery Village and another to North Potomac schools and Research Blvd.

Does your kid have a classmate or friend who has also gotten in to either program? You could try to carpool with their family. For science, Parkland.

The better option is the one that will require less time driving back and forth.

I had 1 kid go to Parkland and 1 go to the humanities magnet when it was at Clemente. The advantage for Parkland is 8 classes with more science electives, and the band director was really good. This DC ended up at Poolesville SMCS magnet. The advantage for the humanities program is more rigorous writing and integrated content between the English/Social Studies/Media classes so that they did really deep & involved projects. DC2 was in advanced math classes, so that was fine, but science was meh. The Clemente band director was terrible, so that got dropped unfortunately. Still would have liked another elective. This DC ended up at RMIB magnet.

If your DC has balanced interests and wants to aim for IB, I’d choose MLK. If they lean very science-y, Parkland.

Anyone whose kids went there or have current students - how is the Humanities magnet program? My kid got the Parkland lottery and we accepted. DC now got accepted into the Humanities magnet at MLK. Which would be a better option? Parkland seemed very interesting since it is a whole school magnet. My kid is more into Math and is in the Advanced track for both Math and Reading currently.
