I work at a company where the boss clearly brought over his favorite employee from his last role and they’re super close. He’s fake nice to us but has said he only really trusts her so why bother getting close to these people?

Or put up a silly new background. Palm trees or .... you're under WATER. Hehe

I think some ICEBREAKERS and FUN FACTS about yourselves are just the thing to give those Zoom meetings some zip!

I heard about this fun new thing ... TWO TRUTHS and (wait for it) A LIE!

I'm the same, especially in mixed company.

Congratulations! You’ve become old! When you’re around long enough, other people become less interesting because you’ve seen it all before. This is a you problem. Try getting a hobby.

At work I have almost no personality. I actively avoid saying anything remotely interesting or that could invite more talk or questioning. I just do my job.

That could be their true personalities. But if not, it could be attributable to a number of reasons: artificial nature of zoom/video calls and/or concerns about being recorded; bad team dynamics; fatigue/not feeling well; burnout; work frustration; history of negative reactions to more outgoing personality...

Also, are you a newer employee?

Seriously, especially on a video call. People are very aware that they could be recorded and it’s harder to know if you are doing anything wrong because of limited body language (food on teeth, joke too edgy, etc).

You are there to work, not be entertained.
