Can you share why you wouldn't recommend for a child with an IEP?

Take the spot at Burroughs and try the lottery again next year for an immersion school if that’s where you would rather be. Neither school will move through that list. (We were once #20 at Stokes for Pre-K 3 and only moved up maybe 6 spots)

To put a finer point on it, modulars would be a PK4 and K issue for you, not a PK3 problem. Some of the other neighborhood schools are also up for renovation in the next few years. Bunker Hill will be swinging into the modulars next. Not sure when Noyes and Langdon start and where they are swinging to.

You can reorder your myschooldc list before you accept the waitlist offer, and put even schools you are waitlisted for but ranked less than this school. It’s only once you enroll that it automatically takes you off the schools you ranked lower.

I mean, I assume you ranked them in true order based on your preference. But if you want to keep your WL on the schools below while you think about the modernization/swing space issue, you can do that by reordering.

You won’t get in to DCB with that waitlist number. I don’t know anything about Stokes but I doubt that one as well.

Would you be more comfortable at Bunker Hill or Noyes or Langdon (depending on where you live) for two years to NOT be in a trailer? Your kid would probably have a decent PK3 and PK4 experience at any of those if you don't get into a charter you prefer. You could also check out short waitlists by school and grade and put in a post-lottery application at one of those: https://www.myschooldc.org/short-waitlists

In terms of what life is like in a swing space I think that's heavily situationally dependent. Some swing spaces are old school buildings just in a different part of town (so longer commute than a neighborhood school). My understanding of the Burroughs swing space is that it is "modular units" (aka trailers) on the field next to the school. So the good news is that the commuting distance doesn't change (presumably you live in the Brookland/Woodridge area). But the bad news is your kid will be in trailers instead of a school building for two years.

Burroughs is a good school with an active community and strong teachers. We are having a good ECE experience and like the teachers and Principal. I do NOT recommend for a kid who may need an IEP.

Do you mean give up the offer at Burroughs and hope for something to come through from a charter you ranked higher?

What is your alternative if you turn it down and don't get in anywhere else? Are you able to stay at your current daycare or homecare? Do you have a private as backup? If you're set on sending your PK3 kid somewhere you should accept the Burroughs spot and then "hope" through the summer for movement on your other waitlist spots. What's important to note is that waitlists will move throughout the summer and in the fall up through early October. So you could start at one school and get an offer (or multiple offers) to switch even after school starts.

If you've ranked charters above Burroughs, you won't give up your spot on those waitlists if you accept the Burroughs offer. If you've ranked charters below Burroughs then you would (though that would also have been true if you matched initially).

If you would go to Burroughs but there is at least one other school you would prefer, then it seems like you should both accept the spot and keep hoping for WL movement.

Just got off the waitlist for John Burroughs for PK3. What’s up with the renovation? I’m also waiting on charters. Should I give up my spot and hope? The swing space should only be up for 2 years. What’s life like in a swing space for PK3 and PK4??
